There will be games for the family and prizes, such as hula hoops, jump ropes, sport balls and drawings for bikes, said Caroline Brown, health and fitness director at the Marysville YMCA and a member of the Get Movin’ organizing committee. The best way to battle childhood obesity is to get the whole family involved, spending less time in front of the TV and more time outdoors, he said. It is one of a number of grass-roots programs that have sprung up across the nation to encourage kids and families to become more active — among them, the Shape Up Sommerville program in Maine and the Healthy Florida programs in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Tallahassee. Sponsors of this year’s Get Movin’ program include the YMCA of Snohomish County, Stevens Hospital, The Everett Clinic and The Herald. Read Childhood Obesity

TRICARE has partnered with the United States Department of Health and Human Services to help spearhead the effort to raise awareness among military families as well as the general public. Overweight or obese children may tend to mature earlier and may be taller and more sexually mature than their peers, raising expectations that they should act as old as they look, not as old as they are; overweight girls may have irregular menstrual cycles and fertility problems in adulthood. If you’re a parent who watches like a hawk every bite your child puts into their mouth, it might not be such a bad thing after all. Previous studies have suggested if parents are too strict with waht they let their kids eat, those kids are likely to binge later in life and gain weight. But a new study suggests controlling your child’s eating habits and coaxing them to eat certain foods may not lead to future weight gain. In fact, researchers believe some degree of control may actually be beneficial in helping children maintain a healthy weight. Robert Bradley, who was part of the research says, “I think it suggests like so many studies do that we need to look into these a lot deeper so that we can find the kind of information, what kind of control, if any, at what time in a child’s life really does enable them to eat better and therefore not gain weight.
