With one in three children in the United States overweight or obese, Fit Kids of Arizona is looking to prevent the problem in the future. Although most of their efforts are focused on working with the clinic, the Fit Kids program is looking for ways to work within the school district and after-school programs to bring in more nutritional education âby partnering with the schools and working some of that into the mandated curriculum,â said Hernandez. The Fit Kids program plans to partner with FACTS in the future in order to target children because âthen we are not taking away from the academic dayâ¦but we can still reach a large portion of the kids,â said Hernandez. Children under the care of FACTS are not allowed to sit in front of the television or play video games but are encouraged to go outside and play. The program will continue to develop community relationships with other organizations that will add to the overall success of promoting a healthier lifestyle for Americaâs future adults. The sugar addiction then creates its own unique denial system, one that becomes part of the personâs overall eating and nutrition habits. BREVARD is for children 5 to 12 years of age, and their parents, and provides wellness education. This event is designed for children 5 to 12 years of age, and their parents, and provides education on nutrition, exercise and wellness. Many more may be at risk for obesity if proper nutrition and exercise are not incorporated into daily routines to reverse the trend. Adding excitement to this event will be  appearances from sports celebrities, giveaways, an interactive health fair, and physical activities such as a climbing wall, bounce house, skateboard ramp (bring your own equipment), relay races, obstacle courses, a golf clinic and soccer drills. Childhood obesity is on the rise, and as parents you have a choice—be a contributor or be a role model. Only a generation ago, dinners were eaten together, school lunches were often brought from home, and pre-packaged or fast-food was the exception rather than the rule for meals. Participants in the 1970 study had been assessed when they were 10 years old for emotional problems, self-perceptions and their body-mass index (BMI), a height-to-weight ratio. The researchers found that children with a lower self-esteem, those who felt less in control of their lives and those who were often worried were more likely to have a higher BMI over the next two decades. It was also noted that girls were more affected by these factors than boys, the study authors pointed out in a news release from the journal’s publisher. The findings also suggested that childhood emotional problems may be another factor that can lead to excess weight, according to the researchers. Early intervention for children suffering from low self-esteem, anxiety or other emotional challenges could help improve their chances of being healthy later in life, the researchers added. Unfortunately, that statistic puts us near the top of the list in one category where we want to be at the bottom, as we are fifth-worst in the nation. At a time when kids should be more active and slimmer than at any time in their lives when they are not stuck behind a desk all day but instead running around at recess they are beginning their lives headed down a dangerous health path. If we are to improve this problem, adults will need to lead the way to a fit lifestyle. Our children spend a great deal of time at school; from the cafeteria to the ball fields, we need to make those hours as healthy as possible. Irish families urgently need to change their lifestyles to combat the ticking timebomb of child obesity, President Mary McAleese has said. With one in 10 children classified as obese, President McAleese warned the country was storing up a host of health, social and economic problems. Modern lifestyles may have let shared family meals slip down our list of priorities but now we can see the price being paid by some of our children.
