The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, whose charter members include Lubbock-based United Supermarkets, has committed $20 million to encouraging consumers to work off the calories they eat by participating in physical exercise. The “F as in Fat” report, published in July by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, estimated Texas had the 14th highest rate of adult obesity in the nation, at 29. Addressing the issue through schools involves the foundation supporting plans to expand the “Healthy Schools Partnership” program - which involves the American Council for Fitness and Nutrition Education, the American Dietetic Association and PE4life - to schools in Chicago, Des Moines, Washington D. The foundation’s efforts will be monitored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which has committed $500 million to the task, Sanders said. Dan Sanders, CEO of United Supermarkets, prepares to begin a news conference to announce the launch of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, an effort by various food and drink companies to try to help reduce obesity. A lack of sleep is linked to increased hunger in both adults and children and this can increase appetite and body weight. Televisions, computers and mobile phones in a child’s bedroom all affect sleep, they said, and research has shown that for every hour a child is sitting – whether watching TV or reading a book during the day – it takes an extra three minutes for them to get to sleep. Making sure your child exercises for at least an hour a day, giving them healthy food, creating a restful sleeping environment and a bedtime ritual means that your child will be ready to sleep once they’ve been tucked in and it’s time to turn out the light. Around one third of children in Britain are overweight or obese and only one fifth of parents know children should be physically active for one hour a day. Read Childhood Obesity

Parents shouldn’t force their children to finish their meal if they say they’re full, according to new healthy living guidelines released by the federal government on Thursday. Television also limits toddlers’ ability to develop “a full range of eye movement” and “reduce the length of time they can stay focused”. The Get Up and Grow booklets are available free from the Department of Health and Ageing. Read Childhood Obesity

Obesity, preventable chronic disorders, increasingly drug resistant infectious diseases such as MRSA, & viral killers like the H1N1 or Swine Flu have dominated public health concerns in recent years. Two years ago, amid a MRSA scare, Putnam County installed hand sanitizer dispensers in classrooms, and this year when concern grew over the spread of H1N1 among Upper Cumberland school children, Putnam County’s Coordinated School Health Director Lori Paisley met with principals from across the county to develop procedures for dealing with potentially contagious students.
