Obesity, preventable chronic disorders, increasingly drug resistant infectious diseases such as MRSA, & viral killers like the H1N1 or Swine Flu have dominated public health concerns in recent years. Two years ago, amid a MRSA scare, Putnam County installed hand sanitizer dispensers in classrooms, and this year when concern grew over the spread of H1N1 among Upper Cumberland school children, Putnam County’s Coordinated School Health Director Lori Paisley met with principals from across the county to develop procedures for dealing with potentially contagious students. A twenty-four hour policy was adopted, in which parents with students exhibiting flu like symptoms were asked to keep children home, and not to bring them back to school until the student had sustained a normal body temperature for a full twenty-four period while off of fever reducing medication. Childhood obesity also tops the list of public health concerns schools have been asked to tackle.
