The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, whose charter members include Lubbock-based United Supermarkets, has committed $20 million to encouraging consumers to work off the calories they eat by participating in physical exercise. The “F as in Fat” report, published in July by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, estimated Texas had the 14th highest rate of adult obesity in the nation, at 29. Addressing the issue through schools involves the foundation supporting plans to expand the “Healthy Schools Partnership” program - which involves the American Council for Fitness and Nutrition Education, the American Dietetic Association and PE4life - to schools in Chicago, Des Moines, Washington D. The foundation’s efforts will be monitored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which has committed $500 million to the task, Sanders said. Dan Sanders, CEO of United Supermarkets, prepares to begin a news conference to announce the launch of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, an effort by various food and drink companies to try to help reduce obesity.
