The tax-funded program now serves more than 300,000 Ohioans in families with incomes at or below 185 percent of the poverty level, said Michele Frizzell of the Ohio Department of Health. More than half of all babies born in Ohio are enrolled in the program, and Franklin County — with a monthly average of 37,400 recipients — just nudged ahead of Cuyahoga County as having the highest number of participants in the state, Frizzell said. Kristin Mullins of the Ohio Grocers Association said one tough switch is the “split-tender” allowed in the new WIC packages. And if Aunt Millie’s Hearth All Natural 7 Grain hamburger buns meet the new WIC standards, it won’t much matter if the corner store doesn’t stock them and the big-box is too far away, said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. You know, there’s a lot about America that goes untold nowadays and, you know, if we don’t keep, you know, what we used to do worked just fine, you know, and I mean, I remember when I was young I went outside all the time and picked blackberries off the bushes and my grandma would make pies. And to be able to take my daughter back there, you know, in that middle of the afternoon and to pick tomatoes right off of the vine, and strawberries, it’s a whole new experience for her. It’s something so simple but so healthy and so really down to earth, you know, and just, that’s part of that getting outside, getting your hands dirty and doing something other than a video game for a little while. So I mean, anything that we can do we’ll do, but like, you know, I think the reason that we’re here today is to try to spread that kind of information, you know. Read Childhood Obesity

Northeast Middle School in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Vikings, National Dairy Council and the Midwest Dairy Council are partnering together to launch Fuel Up to Play 60, a new initiative aimed at tackling childhood obesity by giving youth a voice in changing the school nutrition and physical activity environment. Northeast Middle School, part of the Minneapolis Public School system, and its 400 youth will compete against 36 million other students in 60,000 elementary, middle and high schools nationally to make healthy changes in their local schools and communities. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a free, youth-led program that empowers children and teens to take charge of their health and work with school leaders to create opportunities for 60 minutes of daily physical activity and to make more healthy foods available at school, like low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Meals and snacks consumed at school provide one-third to 50 percent of a student’s daily nutritional needs, making the school environment an ideal setting for teaching these healthy behaviors so they become lifelong habits.
