When Lake Forest School District 67 could not stock low-fat strawberry milk for a short span this fall — leaving students with a choice of plain, chocolate or organic milk — several parents voiced concerns that kids might miss the daily serving of calcium, a district spokeswoman said. Researchers doing a similar study for the milk industry heard about the experiment from a news story and volunteered to advise the district on its data collection. The human body can digest Twinkies (barely) too, but that doesn’t mean they are not bad for us and we should give them to our kids under the banner of “nutrition”. I choose not to drink milk because I bother to take the time to consider the impact of my consumer choices and know that even though it doesn’t hurt my stomach, mass consumption of dairy hurts our health, our planet, and is completely unsustainable in just about every way.
