If lawmakers approve a snack tax, Maryland would be the only state to impose such a levy, said Jim McCarthy, president of the Snack Food Association, based in Arlington, Va. But a health ranking — released jointly in November by the American Public Health Association, Partnership for Prevention and United Health Foundation — showed obesity in Maryland increasing 122 percent in just two decades. Some of the report’s recommendations include making healthy food more available, increasing enrollment in government-funded nutrition assistance and education programs, improving nutrition and health education in the schools and increasing public awareness about nutrition and physical activity. Harrington said the snack food industry lobbied intensely against the bill, which he said was an effort to address the health problems caused by obesity. In case lawmakers do not implement a tax on sodas or snack foods to pay for the committee’s recommendations, Regan said the department has applied for $13 million in stimulus money for obesity prevention. Exploration of barriers to and facilitators of parental decisions to adopt obesity prevention recommendations will inform future efforts to reduce childhood obesity. Members of all groups identified economic barriers (time and dollar costs) among a variety of pertinent barriers, although the discussion of dollar costs required prompting. Parents cited other barriers including child preference, difficulty with changing habits, lack of information, lack of transportation, difficulty with monitoring child behavior, need for assistance from family members, parity with other family members, and neighborhood walking safety. Facilitators identified included access to physical activity programs, availability of alternatives to fast food and TV which are acceptable to the child, enlisting outside support, dietary information, involving the child, setting limits, making behavior changes gradually, and parental change in shopping behaviors and own eating behaviors. Children’s fitness in the UK has declined by eight per cent, compared to an average of only four per cent for the rest of the world. Their study – published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood journal – will fuel concerns about the selling-off of school playing fields under Labour and the health consequences for the so-called “PlayStation generation”. Critics accused the Government of presiding over the decline of school sports and said the recent investment of billions of pounds to encourage them to become more active was clearly not working. The researchers used ‘shuttle runs’ to test the children’s cardiovascular fitness – usually defined as how efficiently the heart, lungs and other parts of the body deliver oxygen to muscle tissue to aid endurance and prolong physical activity. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Essex, who carried out the research in an affluent area in Chelmsford, said “less active” lifestyles were to blame for the decline. Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - Researchers have come out and confirmed that they have found a link between missing DNA, and severe childhood obesity. The research was carried out by scientists from Britain, and focused on around 300 children, with an average weight of 220 pounds and an average age of 10-years old. The hope was that by carrying out the study they would be able to try and find a link between their DNA make-up and their obesity problem. The discovery was that there was missing DNA in all of these kids, and the DNA that was missing was said to be the same. The issue here is that without this DNA, the kids are not able control their appetite, meaning they do not detect that they are full. The missing DNA was said to be vacant in 99% of 1,200 obese children. Read Childhood Obesity

Children Now , the advocacy group that commissioned the study, claims that voluntary pledges made by the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI) in 2007 to improve the quality of food advertising to children have failed. The CFBAI was formed in response to a 2006 Institute of Medicine report commissioned by Congress that found food advertising to kids was having a serious impact on the childhood obesity crisis, fueling earlier onset and increased rates of diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. The more recent Children Now study looked at changes in food advertising to children since the industry group promised to improve in 2007. In short, as federal agencies begin hearings to look at the issue of food marketing to children, their conclusion is likely to be that these companies, much like the children themselves, simply cannot help themselves. Researchers at the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention observed and reviewed physical activity and playtime practices and policies in 96 centers across the state. In 82 percent of the centers, children were not sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time and about 56 percent of centers had a written policy on physical activity. Meanwhile, another study published by the same group in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine found that research into finding effective ways to increase physical activity in child care centers is still a new field. The study, led by Dianne Ward, a research fellow at the center and a nutrition professor at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, is the first to systematically review research databases for such papers. For example, other areas that relate to physical activity at preschools include the physical environment (such as fixed and portable play equipment), sedentary environment (such as television viewing time and the presence of TVs and computers in classroom), staff training and behaviors (such as staff joining in active play and providing verbal prompts to increase active play) and a written physical activity policy. According to the survey, the issue of food safety was the biggest story of the yearâ”from E. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 76 million cases of food borne illnesses occur annually in the United States; more than 300,000 persons are hospitalized and 5,000 die. When Americans were asked to recall the top food stories of the decade, nutritional concerns and food safety garnered the top spots. With more than 9 million children categorized as obese, childhood obesity became a major national concern and garnered the top spot for the decade. The FTC and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) continue to urge food companies to develop products that are more nutritious and to review and revise their marketing practices. The prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years to 17 percent in 2006, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A child will see 55 commercials for the least nutritious food, compared with only one commercial for highly nutritious food, in ten hours of television programming, the So We Might See coalition cites. The proposals, drafted at the request of Congress and presented Tuesday, suggest that advertising be limited to foods that provide a “meaningful contribution to a healthful diet. Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz has expressed concerns that the food industry isn’t doing enough to limit the marketing of unhealthy foods to children. Read Childhood Obesity

Health campaigners have called for universal free school meals and better access to playgrounds as key to fighting child obesity, amid warnings of an epidemic of the disease among working-class youngsters. A study by University College London predicted that obesity levels among children in England will increase "considerably" by 2015 unless action is taken to reverse the trend. And they targeted aggressive promotion of cheap junk foods and lack of access to a healthy diet and exercise as the main cause of rising childhood obesity. Geoff Martin of pressure group Health Emergency accused ministers of "sacrificing children’s health for ready cash" by selling off local playing fields in deprived inner city areas. Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth is delighted to announce the planned purchase of 22 new Chinook helicopters for use in Afghanistan, even though they will not be available for at least two years. Matt Hurles from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, looked at 300 children with severe obesity. The team scanned each child’s genome looking for copy number variants (CNVs), or large chunks of DNA either duplicated or deleted from the genes. By identifying CNVs that were unique in children with severe obesity compared with over 7,000 healthy controls, researchers found certain parts of the genome were missing in some patients with severe obesity. Some of the children in the study had been formally placed on the Social Services “at risk” register on the assumption that the parents were deliberately overfeeding their children and causing their severe obesity. We hope that this will alter attitudes and practices amongst those with professional responsibility for the health and well-being of children.
