But Labour’s Lord Pendry, who boxed for the RAF and is President of the Football Foundation, said that the situation was not “hopeless”. Opening a debate on the subject, he highlighted the increasing nature of the problem but said the Government and other organisations were taking steps to address it. An NHS report had found that 16% of girls and 17% of boys aged between two and 15 are classed as obese, he said. A number of organisations are doing good work and we are seeing worrying trends begin to reverse with record investment in our young people. Lord Addington, for Liberal Democrats, said that childhood obesity was a subject “we have got to carry on coming back to”.
