The number of overweight kids has tripled in the last 30 years, and an alarming number of American children have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. We also need to address the retail industry practices that create “food deserts” — leaving millions of families, especially in African-American and Latino communities, without access to a supermarket. Instead of the range of choices most of us enjoy, food-desert families are forced to shop from a limited selection of processed junk foods at the local convenience or liquor store.
