Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration to develop a plan and networks to address childhood obesity in Linn and Lincoln counties. Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City received the grant on behalf of SHS, which will use the funds to establish the Coast to the Cascades Childhood Obesity Project in the two counties. Statistics show that in 2008, nearly 25 percent of children in Linn County and 44 percent of children in Lincoln County were considered obese or at risk of obesity. In June 2009, SHS and the Benton County Health Department co-sponsored a childhood obesity summit, which 55 participants attended from Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties. Read Childhood Obesity

The study is looking for Youths both male and female between the ages of 8 to 16 with a BMI greater than or equal to the 85th percentile for age and gender. This study is geared at reducing the BMI of a child with the use of a portion control tool over a period of 6 months. To begin the participant will be given a one hour long session with a clinical dietitian about healthy eating habits and will be provided with the Canada food guide. The duration of the study will span six months and data will be collected at the beginning for baseline, then again at three and six months. The Alberta Children's hospital will be the setting for all the conducted studies. The solution is simple and can be planned into everyones eating regiment for the day. Read Childhood Obesity
