Topic: Childhood Obesity News - Chronic health problems among children on the rise - Baltimore Sun (blog)

In fact, the prevalence of child chronic health conditions, from asthma to behavioral problems, increased from nearly 13 percent in 1994 to nearly 27 percent in 2006, according to a new study appearing in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association . Only about 7 percent of children who reported a chronic health problem in the beginning of the study had one six years later, researchers found. While the increase in obesity has been well-documented, the rise in other conditions is less understood, the study states. One explanation is that children have better access to specialized care for chronic problems and are able to survive diseases today that would have killed them decades ago, the study explains. The data presented by Van Cleave et al suggest that the prevalence of other chronic health conditions is also increasing among US children and that obesity is not the only clinical time bomb ticking away in children. Kelly Brewington came to the health beat a year ago after covering everything from education and government to race and immigration in her 11 years as a reporter. Read Childhood Obesity

The number of overweight kids has tripled in the last 30 years, and an alarming number of American children have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. We also need to address the retail industry practices that create “food deserts” — leaving millions of families, especially in African-American and Latino communities, without access to a supermarket. Instead of the range of choices most of us enjoy, food-desert families are forced to shop from a limited selection of processed junk foods at the local convenience or liquor store. Turn off the TV, throw away the video games, and take the kids to the playground. Read Childhood Obesity

Ralph Nader: 'King Obesity's Realm' - Independent Political Report- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

Eating fat, sugary and salty food while sitting for hours daily looking at video screens, being bused to and from school, and not having to bother with physical education, millions of lads and lassies were following orders. His fleshy fingers clutched the plan by those people he always called the âlean and meaners,â and saw that improvement in the school lunch programâs menu, exercise at school, farmersâ markets and community gardens were at the top of the action list. For some reason, they avoided the real causes of his success in pouring massive amounts of empty calories into the mouths and down the throats of these children who cry out for more and more of them. Hah, not a chance unless she wants a rebellion of the kids, whose habit is to cast aside much of the cooked and raw vegetables even when theyâre hungry. With that pontification, a smiling Obesity picked up a dozen triple deck cheeseburgers, a gallon of thick ice cream milk shakes, 100 Hostess Twinkies, topped off with a bucket of sweetened lard to start his third meal of the day. If Michelle can do it (I like to call her Michelle because I feel like she’s the kind of mom I’d be friends with, if it weren’t for the D. A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the most obese of thousands of children studied through adulthood were more than twice as likely as the leanest kids to die before reaching age 55. After first lady Michelle Obama announced her campaign to combat childhood obesity, White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford and White House pastry chef Bill Yosses appeared on “The Martha Stewart Show” to highlight some of the first family’s favorite meals, including turkey lasagna with spinach. All aboard for Michelle Obama's childhood obesity campaign - Los Angeles Times- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

Still, we weren't quite prepared for the barrage of news releases from bandwagon-jumping organizations that couldn't wait to say they were on board with the plan. We guess they're thinking more about the "fun" part and less about the studies linking soda consumption to weight gain in children. Yes, it may be a bandwagon full of unlikely characters that play a role in creating this problem, and of course I'm a bit suspicious of their motives, but at least the measures they're proposing sound pretty good. This type of actvity does not teach the child anything, except how to be anti-social, lazy, and make poor choices with the use of their time. The government should mandate that all schools that use federal monies take out there soda machines and do away with all foods that do not fit in the healthy daily requirements a child should get, less carbs and more fruits and veggies. Helping children who have this problem means first altering the attitude and lifestyle of the parents, then the children. Read Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity News - Premature death linked to childhood obesity, glucose intolerance, hypertension - Endocrine Today
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Obesity, glucose intolerance and hypertension in children without diabetes appear to be significant predictors of premature death from endogenous causes later in life. Proportional hazard models adjusted for baseline age, sex, birth cohort and tribe (Pima or Tohono O’odham) were used to determine if these risk factors were correlated with death before the age of 55 years. Children in the highest quartile of BMI had significantly higher rates of death from endogenous causes — more than double compared with children in the lowest quartile (IRR=2. Children in the highest quartile of two-hour plasma glucose levels during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test had a 73% higher risk of death linked to endogenous causes compared with children whose glucose levels were in the lowest quartile (IRR=1. The researchers postulated that the association between premature death from endogenous causes and cholesterol levels may be related to the low proportion of deaths related to cardiovascular disease (13. Further, “cholesterol levels … are lower in American Indians than they are in most other ethnic groups, a finding that may partially explain the absence of association for this trait. Solano officials endorse first lady's 'Let's Move' anti-obesity campaign - Vallejo Times-Herald(Childhood Obesity News)
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
The national “Let’s Move” public awareness campaign encompasses a four-pronged approach — helping parents make better food choices, serving healthier food in school, making healthy food more available and affordable, and encouraging children to exercise more. George Miller, D-Martinez, called the Let’s Move campaign “one of the more important things we’ve done to change the status of obesity over the next few years. Meanwhile, Congress can help by reauthorizing the federal school meal and nutrition program, and also help find ways to allow schools to bolster physical education classes, some which have been cut due to fiscal constraints, Miller said. Solano County Public Health Education Manager Robin Cox said the county is working with the Solano Transportation Authority to encourage children to walk or bike to school. At the Children’s Network, Thomas endorsed efforts to remove sugary drinks and candy from schools, and other efforts to make fresh produce available in low-income neighborhoods. However, when visitors resort to hateful, vulgar or personal attacks or statements, the experience not only is lessened for others, it often drives from the site many people who might have something beneficial to say.
