Montana students dance to fight childhood obesity - KAJ18 Kalispell Montana News- Topic: Childhood Obesity News

BILLINGS- Students across Billings, and the entire country, were dancing Thursday and their boogies had nothing to do with the upcoming summer vacation. At Riverside Middle School, around 100 students who participate in the Fuel Up To Play 60 Campaign at the school (which promotes exercise and healthy eating in students) also took on the First Lady’s dance challenge. Back in 2011, a White House Task Force report found that 1 in 3 children in the United States are obese, a statistic which is part of a climbing trend toward obese children. A statewide effort trying to promote exercise activity among Montana children is the Big Sky Fit Kids Program, which Big Sky Elementary School in Billings has used for the past four years. In the past, the students have chosen to walk or jog during that time, but on Thursday they decided they wanted to line dance. As childhood obesity improves, will kids in poverty be left behind? - CNN- Childhood Obesity News

A new study appearing in the May issue of the journal Pediatrics offers the latest evidence that less affluent children are faring worse when it comes to obesity. Although the children in the study broadly resemble their peers nationwide (the ones with health insurance, at least), the study was limited to just 14 health centers in and around Boston, all of which are part of the same health-care network. The overall rate was unchanged from 2001 to 2007, they found, but only because the declines among teens from middle- and high-income families were canceled out by a sharp increase among those living in poverty, especially the boys. Compared to more affluent children, Wen says, kids on Medicaid may be less likely to live in neighborhoods where they can play and exercise safely outdoors, and their caretakers are less likely to have access to supermarkets selling fresh, healthy foods. In a recent study, also published in Pediatrics, Suglia found that preschool-age girls in big cities were more likely to be obese if they’d undergone stressful experiences such as witnessing household violence, having a mother who was depressed or abusing alcohol or drugs, or living in a tenuous housing situation. The encouraging signs among preschoolers reported in national surveys and in Wen’s study may reflect the widespread attention paid to obesity in recent years, says Kristine Madsen, M. Experts Say Fighting Childhood Obesity Starts at Home - 1011now- Childhood Obesity News
Filed Under Childhood Obesity News | Leave a Comment
Childhood obesity and the need for healthy school lunches has been a hot topic across the country and locally for the past several months, and federal regulation will soon force permanent changes in all public schools. Over the next few years, federal regulations will make those types of changes permanent across the country. In the past we basically said here’s a tray and this is what there is today,” Schneider says. But Registered Dietitian Pat McCoy says having those healthy options at school doesn’t necessarily translate at home. But it’s not the school’s responsibility, it’s the parent,” McCoy says. She says without changes at home, school and government efforts can only reach so far. Read Childhood Obesity

The Reuters analysis was based on records from the Federal Election Commission, the Secretary of the Senate and the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan group that tracks money in politics. In the weeks after the meetings, proponents of tougher standards said, neither the president nor the First Lady spoke out for the work on healthy food guidelines that had been drafted by the administration’s own agencies. In 2009, Congress passed a measure proposed by Harkin and Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) to ask the FTC and three other agencies — the CDC, the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration — to draft voluntary nutrition standards for children’s food marketing. Comparing the last three years of the Bush administration to the first three years of Obama’s, total campaign contributions from the more than 50 food and beverage groups and companies analyzed by Reuters were about the same. The rates of obesity in children under the age of 6 in eastern Massachusetts declined during the period between 2004 and 2008, according to a new study. However, the smaller decrease in obesity prevalence in Medicaid-insured children suggests that the coming years may see a widening of socioeconomic disparities in childhood obesity ,” wrote the study’s authors. Targeting obesity prevention efforts at the youngest children — those under 6 years old — may be the most effective, as children at that age are still predominantly influenced by their parents and what their parents eat, and their lifestyle habits are just developing and may be easier to change, according to the study. During the period between 1999 and 2003, the researchers found that the rates of obesity remained relatively stable among the children. The researchers said they don’t know exactly what caused this drop, but suspect that reduced maternal smoking during pregnancy, increased rates of breast-feeding, more limited television advertising of sweet foods to young children, and increased screening and counseling for childhood obesity may have all played a role. Text message prompts can help patients living with long term conditions stick to their treatment programmes - at least in the short term - indicates a review of the available evidence, published online in the Journal of th . Childhood Obesity Leads to Unnecessary Surgeries - New York Times (blog)(Childhood Obesity News)

For many patients, gallbladder disease and its accompanying symptoms are preventable, but you wouldnât know it from the patients whose parents prefer to book the quick fix of the scalpel instead of the slow, but less invasive route of lifestyle change. By the time a patient gets to me, there may not be much choice about taking out the gallbladder â” but it isn’t the inevitable result of the problem, especially if gallstones havenât yet developed. Taking out the gallbladder in the face of obesity is like changing the oil in a car when the transmission is going out. Until the source of the problem is addressed, obesity will continue to ravage the rest of the child. No one knows for certain the long-term consequences of taking out the gallbladder over the lifespan of a child, but thousands are going to find out in the decades ahead. A pediatric surgeon sees the parents of obese children opting for the quick symptom fix of gallbladder surgery over the slow, difficult route of lifestyle change. Read Childhood Obesity
